A rare diamond-encrusted Faberg egg crafted for Russias Tsar Nicholas II has sold at auction for a record-breaking 0522.9 million.
The 112-year-old Winter Egg is one of 43 surviving jewelled eggs made by the House of Faberg in St Petersburg for the Russian royal family before it was deposed in a revolution in 1917.
The 10cm tall curio is made from finely carved rock crystal, featuring intricate engravings and more than 4,500 diamonds. It opens to reveal a removable diamond and platinum basket carrying a posy of white quartz flowers, symbolising the arrival of spring.
An unnamed buyer beat the competition at Christies auction house in London with a bid of 0519.5 million. A buyers premium brought the total sale price to 0522.9 million, surpassing the previous record of 058.9 million paid at Christies in 2007 for a Faberg egg made for the Rothschild banking family .
